YOGA for Peaceful Living, Summer Term 2017:

Have you ever had a great yoga class and then returned back home or work, only to share sharp words and suddenly your neck is all cranked up again?  Or ever had a repetitive thought you just cannot let go?  YOU CAN CHANGE THAT!  

Our physical yoga practice helps soften these habits, but we can also align our postures with 10 basic precepts for PEACEFUL LIVING.  Would you like your mind to focus on more positive things?  Would you like to make your thinking more aligned with the best parts of you, what you value most?  “Asanas,” or yoga poses, are only a small part of what traditional yoga practitioners were to study in order to calm their minds.  Prior to bending their bodies in unusual or even astonishing ways, yoga students were guided to get their daily-life ducks in a row and act right.  The idea is that if you are not following basic guidelines for peaceful living–INCLUDING SELF-CARE!–your physical practice won’t stick; it will simply be undone by all the stinky thinking, misaligned relationships, or a chaotic life.  When we are attentive to our thoughts as we are in our postures, and attentive to our posture every day, we can enjoy a fully integrated health and hence more peace.  Learn this on the mat, then it integrates into your everyday life.  It is meditation in motion!

Attend this series and learn some fun meditations in relation to classical yoga postures you already know (and if you don’t–that’s okay!–you can learn them and it’s fun), and see how things begin to shift both inside and out In order to clear our minds, stay present on the mat, and get into deep stretches, all these classes will include gentle vinyasa, which means coordinating breath with movement.  So we integrate deep breathing as we move into and out of these yoga poses, which in turn integrates our mind and body, using the physical practice to nurture a deeper inner calm.

In the coming months, we will also explore topics such as how to release the Kleshas (obstacles that lead to suffering), as well as lovely practices of Abhyasa (sustained practice), Tapas (transformative fire of committed efforts), Spandana (divine vibration), and Vairagya (non-attachment), and how these relate to practice on the mat and peace and wellness in our daily lives.  Other themes from yoga philosophy from which we can learn and deepen our yoga practice include:  Non-violence, Truthfulness and Non-stealing; Investing Energy Wisely; and Non-Gripping or Non-Clinging, Purification, Contentment (a REALLY fun one to explore in yoga class together!), Self-Discipline and Self-Study, and Surrender and Devotion.  

How does all THAT lead to Peaceful Living?  Yoga class can provide immediate calm and tension release so you return to your days with a refreshed mindset and rejuvenated body.  With continued, committed practice, yoga provides you with increased mobility, confidence, and focus; you then harness that energy to pursue what you truly desire. Each week, you receive a printed guide that includes notes on asanas (yoga postures), breathing techniques, and tons of contemplative and meditative activities to explore that week’s concept in more depth to really encourage deeper and lasting transformation within your body and mind.  Practicing on the mat and continuing contemplation at home means that the above good-living precepts inhabit the forefront of your thoughts and encourage wise daily choices of action.  This is also simply easier to do as your body becomes more easeful and your mind clear through yoga.
