INTRODUCTION TO MEDITATION
So exciting! Our NEW Introduction to Meditation class begins Thursday, August 3, 2017, 7:15 to 8:00 pm.
Meditation is an incredible practice that keeps you grounded and centered and, with sustained commitment, allows you to remain more present and access your best self, often with new insights and wisdom.
Our meditation class begins with simple instruction for 5 to ten minutes, and then includes silent meditation for about 20 to 25 minutes. We then move into shared discussion prior to closing our circle. It is important that you are first physically comfortable. We will be seated on the floor, against the wall, or in chairs; always pick what is easeful, and feel free to shift your body as needed, even during the silent meditation period.
For the month of August, we will practice very simple Mindfulness Meditation techniques in traditions similar to those of Thich Nhat Hanh. Future classes will include approaches of Loving Kindness Meditation, Vipassana, Centering Prayer, and Mantra Meditation in the tradition of the Himalayan Institute. Though it is ultimately recommended to choose one method and commit to it for the best results, for beginning meditators it is often beneficial to explore various techniques to find the right fit for you; meditation is a highly individualized, inner experience. Instruction, teacher guidance and presence, and, most importantly, a supportive community of like-minded and friendly meditators are invaluable resources; they help you cultivate your meditation practice as you begin to witness and honor your own continually unfolding development.
